Wells has been the favourite of Kings, Church and Nobles for centuries. Its Royal Charter dates back to 1201 in the Reign of King John and excavations have shown that there were established buildings here before Roman times. Whilst an ancient city it is nonetheless busy and active with a range of shops, restaurants and leisure facilities. Market stalls are set up each Wednesday and Saturday in the marketplace.
The world renowned medieval cathedral with its impressive West Front is surrounded by a variety of well preserved period buildings including the moated Bishops Palace and the Archdeacons House. Also nearby is the Vicars Close and a 13th century street of cottages reputed to be the oldest in Europe.
The city has excellent communications with the commercial centres of Bristol and Bath about twenty miles away. Two Golf Clubs, the Wells Golf Club and the Mendip Golf Club are both within five miles. Blagdon and Chew Valley Lakes about ten miles away provide excellent fly fishing.
