Wells is one of England's smallest cities and is centrally placed in Somerset. In the 10th century Wells was the thirteenth largest town in the Kingdom and today the Cathedral and beautiful Bishops Palace are at the centre of the Conservation Area. The magnificent gothic Cathedral has one of the last of the few medieval clocks to have survived and this can still be seen making the quarters with four jousting knights on horseback.

Vicars Close, just a short walk away is the oldest complete medieval street in Europe. Built in 1348 as a home for the College of the Vicars Choral it provided the foundation and inspiration for the great music traditions of the City still existing in many of the public events staged in the beautiful setting of the Cathedral. From here the market is reached through a low arch and in winter the Carnival can be seen - a traditional extravaganza which has taken place annually for over a century. The show celebrates Guy Fawkes and is a highlight of the West Country calendar.
