Witney is a thriving market town located on the banks of the River Windrush and was mentioned in Domesday as having two mills and belonging to the Bishop of Winchester. Originally known as Witenie the settlement is believed to have grown up on high ground in the ownership of a man called Witta. Blankets were made in the town for six centuries with the last blanket mill closing in 2002. Today the Blanket Hall with its unusual one handed clock in the High Street serves as a reminder of the town's illustrious past.

The High Street has a variety of shops and the Woolgate Shopping Centre is home to Waitrose, WH Smith and Dixons with many more specialist retailers nearby. There are several excellent restaurants, inns and tea rooms. The town has good sporting and leisure facilities with Badminton, Bowls and Archery clubs. Nearby there are many interesting places to visit including Cogges Manor Farm Museum, Blenheim Palace, Minster Lovell and the Roman villa at North Leigh.
