IMAGINE ... retiring to the splendour of a stately home where you are finally free to spend your time on the things that really interest you, rather than on the chores of everyday life; ... a place where you can enjoy the freedom and independence of your own self-contained apartment, but where cleaning, cooking, grocery shopping can all be things of the past; ...having no need to worry about unexpected household bills, maintenance, security, or lawns that need mowing, but where guest-rooms are readily available for your friends or relations whenever you would like them to stay. If this sounds like your dream then Danny could be its realisation. Nestling at the foot of the South Downs in an area of outstanding natrual beauty, Danny offers the best of all worlds; the charm of gracious living combined with all modern comforts - but without the stress of everyday life. Danny's extensive gardens provide fine views, secluded enclaves and leafy walks. There is even room for you to tend your very own patch should you wish to do so. A well-manicured croquet-lawn lies at the front of the house and, for the more active, the grounds open directly onto walks that stretch across the Downs. Living at Danny means sharing the life of a community of like-minded people. It can also be about developing links with the wider neighbourhood. Whatever your particular interest - be it golf, amateur dramatics, painting, local history, writing, charity work, music - you will find plenty of opportunities to follow it here. There are occasional concerts and lectures, residents have a weekly film and there are numerous other organised events if you wish to partake. History: The name Danny is a corruption of the Saxon Danehithe meaning ‘valley and haven‘. The house in its present form dates from the sixteenth century and has many historical links - the main one being when Winston Churchill was a member of Lloyd George‘s Cabinet. The house was rented for then Prime Minister, Lloyd George, and he lived here with with his dog, his wife Margaret and his secretary/mistress Frances Stevenson. Lloyd George held meetings of the War Cabinet at Danny and in October 1918 they agreed the terms of the Armistice. Danny House estate lies off the road from Hurstpierpoint to Hassocks, and these villages between them have a wide selection of shops. It is 1.5 miles to the railway-station at Hassocks, from which Brighton is a 10-minute and London a 60-minute train-ride. The house minibus makes regular trips to the local villages for those without a car.
