Croatia - Hvar The Hvar Group of Islands Close to the main sea routes and the mainland of the Adriatic coast Hvar has long been inhabited and was often fought over by different dynasties whether French, Italian or Austrian. Nonetheless prosperity came to the island in the sixteenth century when the main protagonists were Venetian and Turkish and wine was produced in enough quantities for export. The island has an excellent climate with mild winters and warm summers and tourism goes back to the founding of the Hygienic Society of Hvar in 1868. |
