France - Barbaton-les-Thermes Famous for its natural thermal waters ![]() Known since Roman times for its natural thermal waters, Barbaton-les-Thermes used to be called St-Pierre-de-Riou-Caou' or ruisseau chaud - hot stream. It has the only baths in France where you can be treated for artritis, rheumatism and varicose veins - all at the same time. Barbaton is the name of the family that settled here in the thirteenth century and the town has recently undergone a major renovation making it one of the most modern spas in Europe. Set in the middle of Armagnac country, part of Gascony, the town has a beautiful fortified church built at the time of the Crusades. |

France - Carcassonne The principal defensive structure on the frontier between France and Aragon. ![]()
The walled town of Carcassonne is best known as a medieval fortified town. For a large part of the 11th and 12th centuries the Earldom of Carcassonne played a major role in the fortunes of the rival houses of Toulouse and Barcelona. This magnificent site was first occupied by the Gauls in the 6th century BC and then came the Romans, followed by the Visigoths, Moors and Franks. Today it is probably as crowded as it was when The Black Prince passed by but no doubt in better condition. During the restoration more than a hundred houses were removed from the lists below the ramparts. Carcassonne itself, west of the river, has many beautiful buildings and was a fortified 'new town' also laid out in a chessboard plan around a central square. There are regular flights to Carcassonne from the UK. |
