Great Missenden : Founded in Saxon times, Great Missenden is an attractive village close to the Misbourne River. Described in 1862 as ‘delightfully situated in a valley on the high road from London‘, it sits within a Conservation Area, surrounded by Green Belt land. One-time host to a dozen coaching inns, Great Missenden was an important stopping-off point on the main route to London. The village is most famous for its Abbey, founded in 1133 as a religious house for Augustinian canons. In 1985 the Abbey was gutted by fire. It has since been restored and is now an educational establishment. Another building of historic interest is the 14th century Church of St Peter and St Paul, which is situated just outside the village. It has a Norman font, and a splendid array of gargoyles and monuments.
