Blackburn was mentioned as Blacheburne in Domesday and is thought to derive its name from 'dark stream'. It lies about eight miles east of Preston to the north of the West Pennine Moors on the southern edge of the Ribble Valley. An old Roman military road passed just to the east of the present day cathedral. The town was one of the first industrialised towns in the world due to its proximity to the then expanding textile industry. The Lancashire cotton-weaving industry eventually declined in the 20th century.
