Kendal : Kendal is the main town south of the Lakes and sits in the Kent valley on the edge of the Lake District National Park. To the east is the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The river Kent runs through the middle of the town between the A6 and A650 and there are many excellent walks. To the south of the river and about a mile from the town centre is the site of the Roman fort of Alauna.
