Goring-by-Sea : Goring-by-Sea was known as Garinges in the 11th century and is now really a western suburb of Worthing lying two miles to the west. The Anglican parish Church of St Mary's was originally built in the early 12th century as the Church of Our Blessed Ladye of Gorynge and was rebuilt in the 19th century by Decimus Burton. The shingle and sand beach provides safe bathing and is popular for a wide variety of watersports. It is separated from the road by a wide grassy bank.
Worthing is mentioned in Domesday and was for much of its history a small fishing village. Today it is the largest seaside resort west of Brighton and dominates this part of the south coast with its fine beaches and over four miles of promenades. There is good shopping and easy access to local centres; Ferring, Goring-by-Sea, South Lancing, by bus or train. Oscar Wilde wrote his play 'The Importance of Being Ernest' at Worthing.
