Wimborne Minster is mentioned in Domesday as Winburne and Ehelred, King of the West Saxons and brother of Alfred the Great is thought to be buried here. In the seventeenth century Wimborne was one of Dorset's four most important towns and its famous Minster housed one of the oldest public libraries in England. The Minster of Cuthberga is built on the site of an eighth century nunnery and has a quarter-jack clock with hammers in the hands of a Grenadier.
Dorset was always a prosperous agricultural community and in the town the Priest's House Museum has a fine display of agricultural artefacts and a collection of horse brasses among its exhibits. The ancient earthwork of Badbury Rings lies four miles north-west of the town. Today Wimborne remains an attractive market town with its ancient Minster overlooking the old buildings in the town centre.
