Rugby was mentioned in Domesday as Rocheberie and had a mill. It probably derived its name from 'Hroca's fortified place' and is about ten miles southwest of Coventry close to the confluence of the Rivers Swift and Avon. It was always an important regional centre but came to prominence in the 19th century as an engineering town. Rugby School was founded in the 16th century and is famous for its headmaster, Dr Thomas Arnold, and for giving its name to the international game of Rugby football which the British still excell at.
