Pontefract was mentioned in Domesday as Tanshelf and is now Pontefract's northwestern suburb. The name Pontefract meaning 'broken bridge' is first recorded in the 12th century and the town has had a turbulent history so much so that the townspeople asked for the castle to be demolished after the Civil War. For much of the middle ages the town was a cloth making centre and the largest town in the West Riding. Today the town is principally a marketing and shopping centre with light industries including sweets now made from imported liquorice.
