Hartrigg Oaks is situated in the garden village of New Earswick three miles north of the City of York. The Trust has developed the village over the past ninety years and accommodation is spread over the 21-acre site. It consists of 152 one and two-bedroom bungalows and 42 en-suite bed-sitting rooms in The Oaks Care Centre which has a restaurant, spa pool, jacuzzi and health activity centre, community shop and hairdressers‘ salon. Local amenIties include a Post Office, a well-used Village Hall (the ‘Folk Hall‘), local churches, schools, and a variety of shops. The benefit to residents is a secure environment where people can live a full and active life in the knowledge that high quality care support is at hand whenever required.

There are extensive communal facilities promoting a stimulating and vibrant community with spacious accommodation both in individual bungalows and in The Oaks Care Centre which is centred in the centre of the site. Hartrigg Oaks is managed by the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust. The Trust has the same trustees and staff as the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, which undertakes national research and development projects in the fields of social policy and practice. Both the Trust and the Foundation are charities and are based in York.

The City of York stands in the great plain between the Yorkshire Moors and the Pennines and lies on the Rivers Ouse and Foss about 25 miles north east of Leeds. The A1(M) at Junction 47 (Knaresborough) is 13 miles and at Junction 45 13 miles. Ampleforth is 20 miles. Fast trains from York to London (Kings Cross) take a little over two hours.
