De Lacy Gardens is situated off Mill Hill Lane to the southwest of the town centre and within walking distance of shops. The development consists of flats with extra care facilities completed in 2007. Facilities include an alarm service and 24 hour non-resident management services, lift, residents lounge, laundry, dining room, community centre, hobby room, activities room, shop, hairdressing salon, library, guest facilities and garden. Pontefract was mentioned in Domesday as Tanshelf and is now Pontefract's northwestern suburb. The name Pontefract meaning 'broken bridge' is first recorded in the 12th century and the town has had a turbulent history so much so that the townspeople asked for the castle to be demolished after the Civil War. For much of the middle ages the town was a cloth making centre and the largest town in the West Riding. Today the town is principally a marketing and shopping centre with light industries including sweets now made from imported liquorice.
