Reigate High Street is long and twisting with many good shops. There are some fine old buildings in the town and an early 18th century market house.
Redhill town centre, with a larger range of shops, is easily accessible being less than a mile. It also has a railway station which provides an excellent service to London. Redhill Common has wide open spaces leading on to Redhill and Reigate Golf Club.
HISTORY
William the Conqueror gave William de Warenne land in Surrey and his son built a castle just south of the North Downs Way. Later the same family caused a town to be built below the castle walls though little of the castle remains save for its mound and the caves beneath with medieval tunnels above which are the Castle Grounds.
The Priory in Reigate was founded in 1235 and later converted to a Tudor mansion. Beneath the old Norman motte and bailey castle is a cave with tunnels used as air raid shelters in the Second World War. On nearby Reigate Heath church services are sometimes held in a converted windmill. Lord Howard of Effingham is buried in the parish church.
