HISTORY

Reigate as a town really began in the twelth century when the De Warennes caused the first properties to be built below their new castle replacing a nearby settlement at Cherhefelle.

William the Conqueror gave extensive lands to William Earl Warren who built Reigate Castle and upon which he now stands, a memorial erected by Richard Barnes in 1777 in Castle Park. On Reigate Heath another Surrey landmark is the 18th century windmill - the only one to have been transformed into a church.

Reigate is an increasingly popular market town with good communications. The town has good local shopping with a Marks & Spencer, Safeway, Boots and Mimis delicatessen and many traditional stores, inns and a variety of restaurants.

There are numerous sporting and leisure clubs in the area including The Reigate Hill Golf Club, Gatton Bottom, the Reigate Health Club, and the Redhill and Reigate private golf course on Penddleton Road in Redhill. Leisure and recreation centres include Donyngs Recreation Centre, Eugene Bann indoor Tennis Centre in Redhill and Nutfield Priory Health Complex and Hotel.

There are many excellent walks nearby with both the North and South Downs just a short drive away. Close to Brooklands Court is Wray Common, one of the many open spaces in and around Reigate and to the north of Reigate is Colley Hill which is owned by The National Trust.

Tenure: 125 Years from June 1987. Ground Rent £50 per annum.
