Newton Abbot lies at the head of the Teign estuary about 13 miles south-west of Exeter and probably derives its name from 'new farmstead, estate or village'. For much of the Middle Ages it remained a market town and was an important agricultural centre. Known as Newton Bushel in the 17th century it was twice visited by kings, Charles I in 1625 and later William of Orange in 1688.
