The area around Newton Abbot has long been settled and the remains of a Norman motte and bailey castle can be seen on Highweek Hill to the west of the town. The New Town of the Abbots of Torre Abbey was given the right to hold a market in the 13th century. Newton Abbot lies about 13 miles south of Exeter and about six miles from Teignmouth on the coast. Torquay is six miles to the south-east and Bovey Tracey five miles to the north-west. Fast trains to London (Paddington) take about two and three quarter hours.
