Buying a property abroad has never been easier and the English have long felt at home with their oldest ally and now in Portugal‘s most southern province a unique retirement village is developing in a beautiful hillside setting. Monte de Palhagueira is a protected enclave of houses and apartments in traditional style close to Santa Barbara de Nexe. Most of the properties are built in small terraces of two and three with some detached houses having wonderful views over the surrounding hills. The nursing home, the community centre and restaurant are well established, and these and other amenities and services provided, residents maintain their independence, with the added assurance that there is skilled help available twenty four hours a day. In 1603, the Countess of Castellar founded this convent for the Merced Order. Two and a half centuries later the Duke of Medinaceli, holder of the title Count of Castellar, repossessed these lands and turned the property into a hunting palace. Today the Convent-House belongs to the La Almoraima estate and is set in an exceptional environment surrounded by nature in the heart of Los Alcornocales Park. Nearby is Castellar de la Frontera truly unique in its class, surrounded by walls built in the 13th century by the Arabs. You can explore this well preserved citadel. You can walk through the maze of small houses and craft shops and visit its historic church and castle. There are spectacular views of the Guadarranque reservoir and the finest Mediterranean hillsides. A picturesque and winding road leads to Jimena de la Frontera, a small town, and to the mountains of the Serrania de Ronda. It is only half an hour to the coast and you are in a different world. http://www.holmesotogrande.com
