Lucca is a beautiful city and looks out for the most part on hills and mountains across the valley of the Serchio. It has a long and turbulent history culminating in the construction of the famous fortifications begun in the sixteenth century. The defensive walls are still intact with huge projecting bastions and today serve a very useful purpose on summer evenings as the best place to walk. The narrow streets hide many richly decorated medieval buildings. The principal market place is the ancient oval amphitheatre and there are numerours churches and medieval palaces lining the streets interspersed with speciality shops, cafes and bars. The Piazza San Michele is where you will find the church of San Michele in Foro adjacent to which is the highest bell tower in the city and nearby are well preserved fourteenth century houses.
