HISTORY The town was known as Burntwood in the sixteenth century and traditionally the county of Essex was always well forested. It also had a strong Roman Catholic following and Elizabeth I prepared to embark her troops from Essex as a result. Four centuries later Quinlan Terry designed the new Roman Catholic Cathedral in neo-classical style and this was completed in 1991. Brentwood : Brentwood lies just outside the M25 at Junction 28 about six miles north-east of Romford and about 20 miles from London on the old Roman road to Colchester. It is thought the Saxons were the earliest settlers and its name probably derives from 'place where the wood was burned'. The town developed in the middle ages and was a popular resting point for pilgrims on their way to Canterbury and Pilgrims Hatch is to the northwest of the town. Although very much a commuter town for London, Brentwood is still surrounded by open countryside and has two large sports centres. Ingatestone Hall is a Tudor house open to the public.
