HISTORY

The manor of Stoke was originally granted by King Aedred to his thane, Aelfric, in 948 and it was then left to Winchester Priory. The old Rectory has foundations going back to the fourteenth century. The parish church of St Mary's is nearby and was once, together with the parish council, the only administrative centre for the whole of Gosport. Along the side aisles are memorials to Admirals of the Blue and Admirals of the Red. William Wilberforce was rector in the nineteenth century before becoming Bishop of Winchester.

Alverstoke is a delightful small 'village' within the town of Gosport close to the sea. Today the village of Alverstoke has a number of good shops and facilities including an inn, wine merchant, restaurant, garden shop, post office, osteopath and antiques shop. There is a doctor's surgery and a church in the village and a bus stop immediately outside the development. Gosport town centre, just a five minute drive, offers Waitrose, Asda and Morrison supermarkets and excellent leisure amenities including a bowling green, swimming pool, bingo hall and library. Golf is available nearby.

Gosport stands at the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour opposite the famous naval dockyard. The town grew up around the ferry terminal for Portsmouth and expanded considerably in the nineteenth century. To the south of the ferry is the submarine museum and to the north the training ship 'Foudroyant' originally built as a 46-gun frigate. Stokes bay is a long shingle beach
