Winchester: Winchester is the ancient capital of England named Venta Belarum by the Romans when it became an important cloth making centre by the River Itchen. Keats wrote: 'it is the pleaseantest town that I was ever in'. Today it is a magnificent city with a famous cathedral and many fine old buildings and the Roman high street is now one of the city's most attractive shopping areas. There are many antique and specialist shops with a wide variety of department stores and boutiques and the antique and craft market is in Kings Walk. There is an open air market three times a week.

There are attractive walks by the river and through the water meadows and many places of interest to visit including museums, galleries, theatres, restaurants and inns. Nearby there are four golf clubs and a modern Recreation Centre in North Walls Park. The city is surrounded by unspoilt countryside and the south coast and New Forset are within easy driving distance. There are direct rail links to London, Southampton and Bournemouth from Winchester's mainline station.

Directions: From Junction 10 of the M3 motorway take the B3330 into Winchester into Bar End past Wharf Hill on your left and then into Chesil Street. Watersmeet will be seen on the left hand side before the junction with Magdal Hill.

Watersmeet: Watersmeet was completed in 1987 and consists of twenty-four retirement apartments in a single building just off Chesil Street in Winchester. The development is close to shops and within easy walking distance of the meadows by the River Itchen.
