An Lac House consists of ten studio flats with shared services built in 1997. Facilities include non-resident management and emergency alarm service, lounge, dining room and garden. Cambridge was mentioned in Domesday as Grentebridge and had a castle and five mills and a population of about 2000. Its name derives from 'bridge over the River Granta' and the Romans called their settlement here 'Durovigutum'. The Anglo-Saxons developed the town with its conjunction of four major roads into a busy commercial centre. It was the highest navigable point on the Cam leading via the Great Ouse to Kings Lynn and the river carried a great deal of Fenland traffic. Today it is a famous university city and flourishing regional centre. Its oldest college, Peterhouse, was founded in the thirteenth century. There are many beautiful courts and gardens open to the public and most of the college chapels and libraries can be visited at specific times. There are many fine old buildings, museums and churches and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is one of the very few round medieval churches in England.
