Writtle Almshouses consists of three one-bedroom bungalows originally built in the 19th century. Facilities include non-resident management and emergency alarm service. Writtle is an ancient village with several historic connections. The Romans were here and then the Anglo-Saxons in the 7th century followed by the Normans with All Saints Church thought to have replaced an earlier Saxon church. Robert The Bruce is thought to have been born in the village once owned by his grandmother Isabel de Brus. Captain Peter Eckersley made the village famous in the 1920s by announcing its name during testing for radio broadcasting at the experimental Marconi station. The village is about a mile and a half west of Chelmsford.
