A Benedictine priory was founded by the de Veres family in the early 12th century and the Earls Colne Heritage Museum records The Earls of Oxford who held the manor for over 700 years. Also the successful Atlas Works firm which made agricultural machinery and gained a national reputation. Ralph Josselin, the famous diarist and local vicar, lived in the village in the17th century. The village has a good range of local shops and an active local community.
