Rutlands Cottages consists of four one-bedroom cottages originally built in the 19th century. Facilities include non-resident management and emergency alarm service. Hempstead was mentioned as Hansteda in Domesday and the famous 17th century highwayman, Dick Turpin, was born in the village pub.It is a small village about seven miles to the south of Saffron Walden and about a mile and a half from Great Sampford. St Andrews Church is listed Grade II with a number of memorials to the Harvey family and an unusual number of lead coffins with carved faces. Saffron Walden is a very attractive town and acquired its name from growing saffron crocuses in the Middle Ages. It became prosperous not just through crocuses but the cloth trade as well.
