Great Waltham is about five miles north of Chelmsford and with good communications and attractive countryside is really a commuter village to all the larger centres nearby. Chelmsford is mentioned as Celmeresfort in Domesday and probably derived its name from 'Ceolmaer's ford' and at the time belonged to the Bishop of London. In the 12th century a later Bishop was granted a Royal Charter to hold a market and an under-cover market is still an important part of the town centre 800 years later.
