Kendal Gardens : Kendal Gardens is situated off Pack Lane to the west of the town centre and consists of 30 bungalows and flats built by Mills & Spencer in 1986. Facilities: These include a resident manager and an emergency alarm system. Basingstoke: Basingstoke is mentioned in Domesday as Basingstoches and having a church and three mills. Today it is a thriving commercial and residential town with good communications north and south. The name derives from 'Basa's people's outlying farmstead' and for many years was not much larger than its neighbour Odiham or its close namesake, Basing. Basingstoke expanded with the coming of the canal in the late eighteenth century and then the railway but it wasn't until the 1950's that major development took place in a short space of time. The old town has some ancient buildings and Deane's almshouses in London Street are of seventeenth century origin. The ruined chapel of the Holy Ghost was built in the thirteenth century. Basing nearby retains its village character and passed into the hands of the Paulet family who demolished the old motte and bailey castle and built Basing House. This was later destroyed by Cromwell in a famous seige. Tenure: Leasehold General Information: Kendal Gardens is managed by Peverel Retirement, Frampton House, 14-16 Queensway, New Milton, Hampshire, BH25 5NN. Telephone 0333 321 4060.
