Formby is mentioned in Domesday as Fornebei meaning 'village belonging to Forni' and historically was always a part of Lancashire. The area is likely to have been settled by the Vikings from Ireland in the 10th century. Formby Hall is a Grade II listed building dating to the 13th century with much of its land now given over to a golf course. Formby beach was the location of the first lifeboat station in the country in the 18th century. Today the town has several supermarkets and a good range of shops. The main shopping area is known locally as The Village and has most high street names, and some cafes and restaurants.
