Northwich is a small town on the rivers Weaver and Dane with a good range of specialist shops, cinema, pubs and restaurants. Nearby is a new retail and leisure centre, Barons Quay, with a large range of services and facilities. The original settlement was known as Condate and salt was extracted by panning from the underground deposits in Roman times. In the 19th century the processed salt was then taken by barge along the Trent and Mersey Canal. The extensive mining eventually led to the creation of underground caverns causing substantial subsidence. The town's heritage has led there to be many places of interest to visit including the electrically operated Anderton vertical canal lift which can lift a boat up to a 100 tons and fifty feet in height. Northwich Abbey was dissolved in the 16th century.
