Northwich is a small town on the rivers Weaver and Dane. The original settlement was known as Condate and salt was extracted by panning from the underground deposits in Roman times. In the 19th century the processed salt was then taken by barge along the Trent and Mersey Canal. The extensive mining eventually led to the creation of underground caverns causing substantial subsidence. To the northeast of the town is the electrically operated Anderton vertical canal lift which can lift a boat up to a 100 tons and fifty feet in height. Northwich Abbey was dissolved in the 16th century.
