Amesbury: Amesbury is mentioned in Domesday as having eight mills but it has a much older pedigree. In Old English Ambresburh - 'the fortress of Ambrosius' refers to the Iron Age fort known as Vespasians Camp to the west of the town and for long an important Romano-British strongpoint in the fifth century. Today Amesbury is an attractive small town in a bend of the River Avon crossed by a five arched bridge in the palladian style. The church of St Mary and St Melor was founded for Benedictine nuns in the tenth century and Amesbury Abbey itself, a successor to the priory, is set in the park and is largely a nineteenth century creation, the previous house being been demolished in the 1830s. Facilities : These include a resident manager and emergency alarm system, guest facilities, laundry and garden. Shops are within easy walking distance. Access : Amesbury is just east of the Salisbury Plain and south of the A303 about fourteen miles west of Andover and eight miles north of Salisbury. The A345 Salisbury to Marlborough road passes through the town. Marlborough is about eighteen miles and Warminster twenty-one miles. The Cloisters : The Cloisters was built in 1986 by Stone and Company and consists of twenty-five flats in two storey buildings close to the town centre.
