Sir John's Jacobs Almshouses consists of ten one-bedroom cottages originally built in the 17th century and renovated in 2000. Facilities include non-resident management and emergency alarm service. Sandy is a small town about eight miles east of Bedford and lies on the River Ivel. The area has long been settled and Caesars Camp above the town is an old hill fort which predates Roman settlement. Mentioned in Domesday as Sandeia it had two mills and its name is thought to derive from 'sand-island'. Today it is the headquarters of the Royal Society for Protection of Birds.
