Barnton lies about three miles west of Edinburgh which sits on the the great black crag of Castle Rock high above the city and its name probably comes from 'Fortification at Eidyn'. There has been a settlement here for many years occupied at first by the British, then the Anglo-Saxons and finally the Scots. The city as we know it today largely developed in the late 18th century to the north of the Old Town with new wide streets, crescents and circuses. The principal architect was James Craig but other architects such as William Playfair and Robert Adam of Bath fame were also involved.
