Portobello is on the coast about three miles east of Edinburgh which sits on the the great black crag of Castle Rock high above the city. Its name probably comes from 'Fortification at Eidyn' and there has been a settlement here for many years first occupied by the British, then the Anglo-Saxons and finally the Scots. The city as we know it today largely developed in the late 18th century to the north of the Old Town with new wide streets, crescents and circuses. The principal architect was James Craig but other architects such as William Playfair and Robert Adam of Bath fame were also involved.

Princes Street marks the southern boundary of the New Town and is one of the most attractive shopping streets in Europe although many of its Georgian facades have disappeared behind department store windows.
