Stratford-upon-Avon was mentioned in Domesday as Stradforde and had a mill with its name deriving from where a minor Roman Road crossed the River Avon. The town is famous for its connections with Shakespeare who was born and died here. The Royal Shakespeare Theatre was built in 1932 and is by the River Avon. The theatre has one of the oldest drama festivals in the country first begun by David Garrick in the 18th century. The town has many old half timbered buildings and has been a market centre for many years with the Stratford-upon-Avon canal being completed early in the 19th century. There are many places of interest to visit including Harvard House, Halls Croft and not least the Shakespeare Centre.
