Slees Almshouses consists of three one-bedroom flats originally built in the 16th century and renovated in 1962. 60+ age covenant. Facilities include non resident management and emergency alarm service. Tiverton was mentioned in Domesday as Tovretone and belonged to the King. Cranmore Castle is just outside the town on Exeter Hill and is an old iron age hill fort and an English Heritage museum. The Grand Western Canal lies just outside the town but originally it was the two rivers, the Lowman and the Exe, which provided for the town's prosperity. The rivers were the power source for the woollen trade and the town's many fine old merchants houses testify to the wealth generated. In the grounds of Bickleigh Castle is a 6th century chapel and on a small hill behind are the remains of a Saxon 'motte' watchtower. Today the town has a varied selection of shops and many places to visit including the historic Pannier Market. Tenure: Licence General Information: Managed by The Tiverton Almshouse Trust.
