The Dartmouth United Charities Almshouses consists of 19 self-contained apartments and people must have lived in the parish of Dartmouth for at least two years. Facilities include non resident management and emergency alarm service, laundry and guest facilities. Dartmouth lies about one mile from the mouth of the River Dart on the west bank of the river. It was an important harbour in the middle ages and Edward III sent his fleet from here to relieve the siege of Calais in the 14th century. The two castles on either side of the estuary were built in the 15th century so that a thick chain could be laid across the river to thwart enemy ships. Today the town is famous for the Royal Naval College overlooking the town from Mount Boone - a hilly peninsula once owned by Sir Walter Raleigh. Dartmouth is also a popular tourist destination with its beautiful estuary and mild climate in the South Hams district of Devon. In old English 'Ham' means a sheltered or protected place.
