Nailsea in the 12th century was known as Nailsi and got its name from 'island or dry ground in a marsh, of a man called Naegl'. The town remained a small village for much of the middle ages until the 18th century and the building of the glass works. Nailsea glass with its distinctive green colour became widely known especially in ornamental flasks, walking sticks and bells. The glass works closed in the late 19th century.
