Benfleet was settled by the Saxons in the 5th century when the area was still largely marshland and came to be known as South Benfleet to distinguish it from a new settlement, Little Benfleet, to the north. The Saxons defeated the Vikings here in 894 and built a church on the site now occupied by St Marys. In Domesday the village was known as Benflet with a mill and belonged to Westminster Abbey.
