Stanmore is within the mainly residential Borough of Harrow and the name Stanmore is thought to derive from the Saxon 'stones by the mere or marsh'. Stanmore Hall near the top of Stanmore Hill was built in 1843 and Bentley Priory was built on the site of an Augustine Priory, founded in the 13th century by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Bentley Priory Open Space is now a nature reserve and part of a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest.

On Stanmore Hill there are a number of fine 18th century houses, and the parish church of St.John's was designed in the Gothic style by Henry Clutton in the mid nineteenth century. Behind this church stands the red brick ruins of the old church, built in 1631. Stanmore has an excellent 18 hole golf course and a branch library, and the Harrow Leisure Centre and adjoining Byron Hall offer a wide range of sporting facilities, events and exhibitions. Harrow has its own Arts Council promoting music and arts in the area.
