Hopton Gardens Almshouses consist of 20 one-bedroom flats with shared services renovated in 2013. The charity helps those who have lived in Southwark for three years and have limited means. Facilities include resident management and emergency alarm service, lounge, laundry and garden. Southwark was an ancient borough and first came to prominence with the Romans with both Stane Street and Watling Street meeting here at the southern end of London Bridge. It was always an important defensive position successfully holding off William the Conqueror in the 11th century. Shakespeare's Globe Theatre opened at the end of the 16th century. Today Southwark has seen significant new development with new offices and residential property occupying previous industrial areas leading to an expansion of food outlets, shops, art galleries, restaurants, bars and cafes. Borough market has become well-known attracting many visitors as does Southwark Cathedral built on the site of the original monastery.
