Cleaves Almshouses consist of 25 one and two-bedroom cottages and flats built in 1669 and renovated in 2004. The charity is for people resident in Kingston-upon-Thames. Facilities include non-resident management and emergency alarm service, lounge, guest facilities and garden. Kingston-upon-Thames was known as Kingston in Domesday and had a church, five mills and three fisheries. It was the oldest royal borough in England and was once a Saxon capital and next to the present All Saints Church is the site of the original Saxon church. In the Middle Ages it was an important crossing point on the Thames and a bridge is recorded here in the 13th century.
