Swindon was known as Suindone at Domesday and belonged to the Bishop of Bayeux and had two mills. It was still a village in the seventeenth century becoming a small town in the early nineteenth to rise as a major industrial centre in the twentieth. Swindon station was opened in 1835 and the town eventually became the home of British Railways' engineering works. The Great Western Railway museum is now housed in a converted Methodist chapel. Today Swindon has many facilities and amenities with art galleries, cinema centres, leisure and sports clubs, parks and gardens and several out-of-town shopping centres. The town is still expanding today with considerable new development to the north-west. There are many interesting places to visit nearby including the White Horse, Waylands' Smithy and Uffington Castle.
