Abbeyfield House was built in 1985 and is situated close to shops in the High Street with 11 studios and shared facilities. Facilities include non-resident management staff and emergency alarm system, communal lounge, dining room, guest facilities, laundry and gardens. Stevenage is about five miles south-east of Hitchin just to the east of the A1(M) and up to the middle of the 20th century it remained a small market town. Its name is thought to derive from 'strong oak tree'. Today it has greatly expanded following its designation as a New Town shortly after the Second World War. The town was planned with six self-contained neighbourhoods and the pedestrianised town centre was the first purpose built traffic-free centre in the country.
