Waterlooville is principally a residential town about six miles north of Portsmouth on the old A3 and about a mile west from Junction 3 of the A3M. Originally known as Waitland End the hamlet started to grow to its present size in the nineteenth century and its name is believed to have derived from 'town of Waterloo' after disembarking troops visited the local inn. Portsmouth was famous for becoming Britain's premier naval base over the centuries and whilst the dockyard was closed in 1981 some naval facilities still remain. In the eighteenth century Admiral John Byng was executed here to 'encourage les autres' as noted by Voltaire.
