HISTORY

The delightful village of Warsash came to prominence in Napoleonic times when it became a centre for building warships for the Royal Navy. In the 19th Century a modest fleet of fishing boats operated out of Warsash using artificial pools along the foreshore to store fish. Prior to the 19th Century it was a small hamlet and less important than its neighbour Hook which serviced the fleet in the 15th century.

Warsash is situated between the cities of Southampton and Portsmouth with towns such as Fareham and Gosport close by. The village has some local shops including a post office and chemist. Banks and the Police Station are at Park Gate with the Doctors' practice at Locks Heath. There is a good selection of pubs and restaurants, many having fine views of the River Hamble. The railway station at Swanwick is about two and a half miles away.

Since the turn of the last century Warsash has developed as a haven for yachtsmen and a centre from which to take walks along the banks of the River Hamble. The river foreshore has been developed as a small boatyard and yacht harbour. The village has a sailing club and the Warsash Maritime Academy provides training for Merchant Navy Officers around the world. Ships, including Queen Mary II, can be seen entering Southampton. During the summer months a small ferry operates across the river between Warsash and the attractive village of Hamble.
