Inverness is the capital of the Highlands' and derives its name from 'Inver' which is the Gaelic for river mouth and 'Ness' from the River Ness. It is an historic and attractive small city with a settlement here in the 6th century when St Columba is believed to have visited. Throughout the Middle Ages the city played a prominent role in the affairs of the Highlands and later in the 18th century the second Jacobite Rebellion was finally put down at nearby Culloden Moor. Today it has a vibrant centre with many good shops, restaurants and inns and new science based industries adding to the general prosperity. Communications are very good with the A9 skirting the eastern boundary over the Moray Firth and linking through to the Black Isle and Sutherland. Inverness Railway Station is close to the city centre and the Airport a few miles to the east. There are many interesting places to visit including Cromwell's Clock Tower, Abertarff House which is home to the Highland Association and 19th century St Andrew's Cathedral with its fine carved pillars. In September the most important solo piping competition in the world is held at the North Meeting. The city's Highland Games attracts huge numbers.
